Frequently Asked Questions |

|
| 1) |
When will the roadway and viaduct be constructed?
The construction of the roadway and viaduct is part of the City of Lincoln/Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan. Originally, the plans were to be completed in November 2006. However, due to protracted negotiations between the City and Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad to determine the required length for the new viaduct, the letting date is expected to occur early 2010.
The City plans to begin acquiring the right-of-way and easements for the roadway and viaduct concurrently with the completion of the construction plans. The schedule for the construction of the roadway and viaduct is currently anticipated to begin in Spring 2010 with substantial completion and opening to traffic in late 2011. Final construction will be completed under traffic in early 2012, depending on acquisitions, agreements and availability of funding.

Will the roadway and viaduct follow the current roadway alignment?
The intent is to have the roadway and viaduct generally follow the alignment of the existing SW 40th Street.

| 3) |
Does the roadway really need to have four through lanes?
Vehicular traffic was previously discouraged on SW 40th Street due to the excessive delay at the BNSF railroad crossing. It has been estimated that 4,500 vehicles per day would have been using SW 40th Street in 2002 without any delay at the railroad crossing. The projections for the future land use shown in the City of Lincoln/Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan in the Year 2025 show a demand of 20,700 vehicles per day on SW 40th Street. The current design will include a two lane viaduct and bridge tying in to the existing roadways on the north and south. Additional lanes will be added in the future as traffic increases and funding is available.

| 4) |
Where is all of the traffic projected to be coming from?
The traffic is generally traveling between the West “O” Street, NW 48th Street, Arnold Heights and Air Park/ Kawasaki area, and southwest/ south central Lincoln. The City approved Airport West Subarea Plan, generally east of NW 48th Street and north of I-80, including an extension of SW 40th Street from West "O" Street north over I-80 to West Adams Street.

| 5) |
Is it necessary to build the entire roadway width immediately?
Initially the project was designed to be built to full width. However, given the rising costs of construction and budget constraints that we see today, an initial two lane roadway is seen as the most reasonable alternative to handle traffic for the next 10 years. The roadway and bridge sections will be designed and constructed such that additional lanes can be added in the future.
